“One expert rightly pointed out that we have Swedish-level spending and Irish-level taxes. We are among the EU leaders when it comes to social spending, while taxes in Poland are lower than the European average. We also have significant defense expenditures. In general, any responsible prime minister must look for solutions that won’t turn the country upside down,” said Prime Minister Tusk.
The expert Tusk refers to is Sławomir Dudek, formerly a senior official at the Ministry of Finance and now President of the Institute of Public Finance. He recently told Wyborcza:
“It’s very concerning that the state of public finances is absent from political debate. This is not a matter of interpretation but of facts — for example, the fact that Poland is under the excessive deficit procedure, and that instead of improving, our indicators are deteriorating.”
